Open Data, meet Oakland.

If you're an Oakland based coder, developer, designer, journo, researcher and you want to help build the first Oakland OpenData portal then please join us next weekend (Feb 25th @10am).  We are partnering with the alpha event of the Code for America Brigade for the first Code Across America day and will spend the day laying out the plans for this new resource for Oaktown.

We want your ideas, feedback, critique, concepts and creative spirit to help us make this work for everyone in Oakland. In mid/late March we will host a hack day in Oakland to do the dev work and get the site up and running, but the planning phase is just as important. We want to brainstorm with you on how we deal with the City/County split, which system we adopt- either the OpenDataPhily or the CKAN system, how it's hosted and who will contribute to maintaining it, branding and promotion and more. We don't want to do this in isolation so here's your chance to help make this happen and to make sure your voice is heard.

We're not about to reinvent the wheel, so we'll be Skyping in with some of the crew from Chattanooga who recently stood up the Phily platform in their town, we'll learn from their process and then work from there. We already have a huge data warehouse of Oakland and Alameda data and we will be publishing it aggressively to whatever site we launch. The city and county are both interested in this happening but have yet to take the lead, so we're doing a Phily and just doing it ourselves. With your help! So register now!

Keep in touch: follow @openoakland and @infoalameda for news and data releases!

Hashtag: #cfa2012 for the day's events.

We would like to applaud and spread the word about Alameda County's increased offerings for geospatial data. For anyone who looked before, you remember the single layer of parcel outlines. The new offerings include layers from supervisor districts to sanitation districts. This is a small step towards open data and we look forward to seeing the county continue along this course.

The layers are static and can be downloaded as zipped shapefiles.

The FBI have just released their latest Uniform Crime Reports data for City and County crime reports (FBI site), so we have updated our Violent Crimes in Alameda County fact sheet for 2010.  This brief report presents an overview of violent crimes in various cities in the county from 2001-2010.  This fact sheet is an important tool for stakeholders seeking to implement effective violence prevention programs in their neighborhoods.

Some of the main highlights from the factsheet include:

  • Since 2008, Alameda County's violent crime rate declined by just 18%, nearly twice the decline seen in the USA and California overall.
  • In 2010 Alameda County's violent crime rate exceeded the statewide rate by 50%.
  • In 2010 Oakland ranked as the most violent city in California with a rate of 1,529 violent crimes per 100,000 people. (See the Business Times article here for comparisons)
  • Over the ten-year period Oakland contributed on average 77% of the murders in the County.

In 2005, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors adopted a violence prevention plan, A Lifetime Commitment to Violence Prevention: The Alameda County Blueprint. The Blueprint serves as the county's guide for supporting and sustaining violence prevention efforts, thereby creating safer communities.  As part of the plan, the county launched the Alameda County Violence Prevention Initiative, which funded violence prevention projects in several target neighborhoods that focused on the youth and reentry populations.   Urban Strategies Council has produced this fact sheet, Violent Crimes in Alameda County, which presents an overview of violent crimes in various cities in the county from 2000-2009.  This fact sheet is an important tool for stakeholders seeking to implement effective violence prevention programs in their neighborhoods.

Some of the main highlights from the factsheet include:

  • In 2009, Alameda County's violent crime rate declined by 13%, roughly twice the decline in the state and national rates.
  • In 2009 Alameda County's violent crime rate still far exceeded the statewide and national rates by roughly 60%.
  • Oakland continues to be the largest contributor to the county rate of aggravated assaults. Over the 9-year period Oakland contributed on average 61% of the county's aggravated assaults.
  • Over the 9-year period Oakland contributed on average 84.7% of the murders in the County.

We're being bombarded with questions about the changes in population in Bay Area cities today. To help answer some of those questions we're releasing some data tables of the city level population changes -- in particular, the changes in population amongst different ethnicities. These tables are available to download in Excel format or as a PDF.

The following table lays out the changes in population counts - the number of people gained or lost in each city by ethnicity. The county gained 57,227 persons in the 10 years between 2000 and 2010, with a loss of 23,982 Black/African-American persons and an increase of 93,200 Asians. The city of Oakland lost 32,989 Blacks and gained 9,912 Whites, while Fremont lost 26,648 Whites and gained 33,167 Asians. Hayward saw an increase of 10,880 Hispanics.
