Note that these totals are based on all reported crimes provided by the OPD and will not accurately reflect official reported UCR totals due to methodology differences. These numbers represent the total counts of each type of crime reported.

2010 Crime Calendars
This year we produced a crime data visualization tool for the Oakland Police Department and the Neighborhood Crime Prevention Councils to help with understanding the crime trends throughout the past year. This method helps to predict likely trends for the upcoming year and is especially insightful about the types of crimes that peak on or around certain public holidays each year. The chart below illustrates the number of crimes per day for all of 2010, to view the full report with crime calendars for violence, property crimes, robbery, shootings, vice and burglary you can download it here.
The calendar includes 6,923 crimes reported by the Oakland Police Department with a maximum number of violent crimes occurring in one day of 40, a low of 4 and the average per day was approximately 19.
Violent Crimes per Day in Oakland in 2010
Each day was given a ranking according to the number of crimes reported that day, and days were
classified into five categories based on their rankings. These categories are displayed in Figure 2. The
darkest category represents days that are in the top 10% of the rankings for crime reports (e.g. at least
90% of other days of the year had fewer crime reports), the next darkest represents days that are in the
11th-25th percentile, the next category represents days that are in the 26th-75th percentile, followed by a
category representing the 76th-90th percentile, and lastly the lightest category represents the lowest 10%
of days by rank.
The data ranges are as follows from darkest to lightest followed by the number of days which fell into each range: >27 crimes (33 days), 23 -26 (48 days), 15-23 (176 days), 12-14 (66 Days), 4-11 (42 Days).

Monthly Crime Trends by Police Command Area for 2010
Key findings from this analysis include:
- Total crime reports in Oakland for 2010 were down from 2009 but slightly up from the previous 3 year average.
- The 3 Command Areas follow similar monthly patterns, although Command Area 3 consistently leads the city in both violent and property crime, on average accounting for 37% of total reports.
- Violent crime reports peak on Sunday while property crime reports peak on Friday.
- Property crimes were reported on the Friday before Memorial Day (5/31) more than any other holiday followed by the Friday before Christmas eve(12/24). While most violent crimes were reported on Halloween (10/31) followed by Labor Day (9/6).
- Crime across the city varied in a similar pattern by month until November when Command Area 3 saw a significant drop not experienced in the other areas.
