In late 2010, Urban Strategies Council was contracted by the City of Oakland in partnership with the Oakland Police Department to perform crime analysis for OPD. This relationship is collaborative and builds on the skills and capacities of both the OPD and Urban Strategies Council's Research & Tech team. We are providing detailed crime maps on a weekly basis to department staff as well as longer term analyses to support data-driven, intelligence led policing strategies in our city.
To see a summary table of crime in Oakland in the past four years read this post.
These hot spot maps depict reports of Violent Crime, Property Crime, Burglary, Robbery, and Shooting and are arranged by Command Areas for the year of 2010. A hot spot is an area with a higher intensity of crime than the surrounding area and is useful as a visual guide to identify areas of high crime incidence.

"Hot spots" is a term that describes locations with more than one report in the time period (2010) or in areas where more than one report occurred in close proximity. While normally one report (incident) can include multiple crimes, these hot spots are computed using only one crime per report (incident), thus the actual number of crimes may be higher in the accompanying tables which show the beat level report summaries for each command area.
